Pharos Marine unveils 60m hydrogen diesel-electric superyacht

 December 29, 2009

Egyptian design studio, Pharos Marine has released plans for a 60 meter eco-friendly superyacht named Orcageno. The yacht design is centered on the hull, a sleek, minimal surface with an axe bowe , offering lower resistance due to low angle of entrance, excellent sea-keeping and a range of up to 13,000 nautical miles. The design of the hull will reduce the wake, therefore lessening the impact on sensitive marine life and shoreline erosion. It will be powered by a hydrogen diesel-electric system which should address carbon emission issues.

The tanks are well isolated and fabricated from stress resistant material connected to each other by means of pipes and valves with sensors to indicate any leakage of hydrogen gas with a reliable shut down emergency system to ensure safety at all times. The propulsion system uses a generator driven by a hydrogen-diesel internal combustion engine which can be operated by either hydrogen or diesel oil to provide power

The propulsion system uses a generator driven by a hydrogen-diesel internal combustion engine which can be operated by either hydrogen or diesel oil to provide power for the Azipod units. As a result, wide ranges can be obtained for hydrogen and diesel operation modes, at a speed of 10 knots, operating on hydrogen mode, it can reach more than 3500 nautical miles and at speed of 18 knots it can reach more than 1800 nautical miles. The forward slender spaces in the yacht are used efficiently for the storage of hydrogen tanks and tender boats.

Yacht Design Blog by Garven Wu

Yacht Design Blog by Garven Wu:  http://garvenwu101.blogspot.com/

Garven Wu keeps a blog commenting on his new design projects. Currently he is undertaking "Project Z," which he calls an "experiemental yacht project with a rough conception."

Here is an excerpt from the Taiwanese yacht designer's blog:

"The essay of the whole concept to this yacht , the "my preference" still to be the core element when developing . When attempting to know yacht design , I admired the wally design then added in minimalism . Besides , "less is more" should be approved by some degrees of perspectives , and the relationship and proportion between each positions, which I'll also be particular about . To conform the regulations , this yacht should be capable of operating in
both the Caribbean ( 加勒比海 ) and the Mediterranean ( 地中海 ) and carrying 12 passengers
and appropriate crew . Hence I plan the LOA with 89 meter long and hull with alloy structure ."

Ghost Yachts & Gloss Design Italy Present the G180

 December 15, 2009

Ghost Yachts and Gloss Design, two powerhouses of yacht building and design respectively, have combined forces to produce their first project, the Ghost Yachts G180. Fine Italian styling combined with cutting edge Dutch engineering and build technology are sure to yield some of the finest craftmanship around.

The G180 begins a new generation in superyacht design and construction. Efficiency in operation, high comfort levels and better sustainability personify everything Ghost Yachts stands for. The design is developed by experience and knowledge but also embodies the vision and talent which is required to think forward.

The G180 combines distinctive design with sustainable and innovative technology. The goal was to build a form that showcases a sophisticated yet uncomplicated design. So, Gloss Design produced a layout that cleverly incorporates the requirements without compromising constructions methods or the need for a largte amount of custom made components. The exterior styling uses lighting to its advantage to emphasize the distinctive shape. The 180' LOA, bow, and 30' beam display the yachts powerful, yet graceful proportions. The result is a harmonious combination of lines and smooth surfaces without gimmicks.

Of course, ecological impact is at the forefront of yacht design today, so both companies took this into special consideration. Hybrid, diesel and electric options proved to be insufficiently sensible for the G180. So, Ghost Yachts contacted Dutch Naval Architects Van Oossanen & associates. Over the past 10 years Van Oossanen have developed the 'Fast Displacement Hull Form.' This design produces the capability of reaching semi-displacement speeds over 20 knots.

Interior

The design and shape of the exterior of the yacht compliments the interior room. Extra space leaves for larger crew accommodations and a tender storage on the main deck that can hold an 8.5 meter guest tender and a 6 meter crew tender. This space and design has left flexibility and options for rearranging the layout of the rooms.

The stateroom for owners is now on the upper deck where it receives more natural light, breathtaking views, and a more flexible way to use the second salon at the aft. The guest rooms do not skimp on space either, as they are located on the forward main deck.

Wandering down to the lower deck we find two VIP suites that offer an extensive living area, with separate lounge areas where guests can maintain their privacy.

The production engineering of the Ghost Yachts G180 is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010.

 December 2, 2009

Victory Design will represent the Made-in-Italy design excellence in the section “Yacht Design” at Idot 2009/2010, the cultural event destined to promote the Italian Design worldwide and organized by Italian Design Foundation. Victory Design is a multi-disciplinary naval architecture studio. Founded 20 years ago it has earned an important place in today’s nautical world designing competition and pleasure boats. “I’m very proud Victory Design was chosen for Idot 2009-2010 – said Brunello Acampora, founder of Victory Design. Being the two projects chosen for Idot very different from each other, they confirm all the skills of our studio”.

Victory Design was chosen and is taking part into Idot 20009-2010 with two different yacht projects: “Arcidiavolo” – a trimaran built by Cantieri di Sarnico – and “Dolphin 64 Fly” – built by Mochi Craft, a brand belonging to Ferretti Group. Realized as a concept boat re-interpreting the overturn tricycle hull designed by Renato Sonny Levi, Arcidiavolo is a prototype showing excellent performances. Its main characteristics were thus applied both to pleasure and competition field. After several tests carried out by Cantieri di Sarnico, the version GT in the pleasure range and the version GTS in the competition range were also built. Dolphin 64 Fly is a pleasure boat whose design was focused on interior elegance and comfort.

Conceived as a refined and appealing yacht, it features a round-shaped hull, distinctive colours for the exterior, precious wood and leather for the interior décor. As well as every model of the Dolphin range, Dolphin 64 fly is a contemporary re-interpretation in Italian style of the classic Lobster Boat, was designed by Victory Design, undertaken at the behest of Norberto Ferretti.  Consisting of 150 products selected in different field of design, the IDOT “collection” will be shown in a worldwide travelling exhibition, which will be held next year from March on in the most important cities for design, according to a programme to be scheduled yet.
