P.B. Behage and Diana Yacht Design develop new greener yachts

July 13, 2010

Over 70 years of combined experience joined their forces for this special project. A range of
yachts with an optimized design for greener use and low running costs.
New design with nostalgic lines brings back the feeling of the classic modeled yachts, modeled
with new updates.
With her steel displacement hull in combination with an aluminum superstructure and a beautiful
canoe stern this yacht offers total luxury and comfortable performance.
With a range of 5,000 nm and maximum speed of 14 knots she will be suitable for blue water
cruising around the world.
She offers accommodation for up to 10 guests. On the main deck there is a large owners
stateroom, that includes a large walk in wardrobe, and a stunning large bathroom, which features
a king size bathtub. There are four large sized guest cabins on the lower deck, two twins and two
doubles.
The main deck features a large main salon, and separate formal dining room. On the bridge deck
there is another large, less formal salon, as well as the ships office and captains cabin. Two
tenders are stored in the traditional location, of the bridge deck aft for friendly services of the
tenders.
The sundeck features a Jacuzzi forward and several sun pads and sun loungers.

Interesting design features are the yachts exterior stairs, leading up to the upper aft deck and the
sundeck they are placed on the centerline of the yacht. The aft decks itself features built in seating
against the aft bulwarks of the traditionally rounded stern.
The team for this new nostalgic design striving towards a reduction of CO2-emission with dear 15
per cent in coming Yacht devises for a greener image an to a not energy waste yacht.
Furthermore, we must as from the first yacht be providing with most modern low-energy
technologies and of energy economical systems, but also at a maintenance pleasant yacht for the
crew.
Eye catcher of this design is the combination of the canoe stern with the vertical bow. The canoe
stern improves course stability and the vertical bow make the yacht slide through the water like the
great liners from the previous century. Another advantage is the extra space in the forward quarter
of the boat compared the conventional faired bow.
Lay-out lower deck.
Aft peak with bathing area and gym, four double guest quarters each with walk in bathroom,
engine room, crew mess, with pantry and crew galley, freezer/fridge/refrigerator area, laundry,
four double crew cabins each with bathroom, forepeak.
Lay-out main deck.
Open aft deck with stairways leading up to the Owner’s deck, main salon, dinning room, on
portside galley, on starboard side an entrance lobby, owners stateroom including a large walk in
wardrobe, a bathroom, foredeck with anchor equipment and stores for equipments.
Lay out Wheelhouse deck.
Open aft deck with tender store, owners lounge and powder room, pantry on starboard, captain’s
cabin, ships office and wheelhouse.
Lay out Sun deck.
Storage for life rafts at sides, 3 Sunbathing areas and central mast Jacuzzi, outside shower, bar.

Nanotechnology in Super Yachts

June 22, 2010

As the super yacht industry moves in a more ecologically focused direction – as demonstrated by the revolutionary Callender Designs super green superyacht concept ‘Soliloquy’ - nanotechnology has a vital role to play in achieving these goals.

Nanotechnology has been described as the next major global growth engine by Merrill Lynch and it is a technology that is moving from laboratory to production rapidly now – and into the boat yard.

Dermott Reilly, CEO of NanoLandGlobal sees the superyacht industry as a hot market.

NanoLandGlobal can offer a range of nanotechnology products tailored to the superyacht industry, including surface treatments products that make yacht painted surfaces self-cleaning, windows resistant to sea salt deposits and easier to clean, and all surfaces dirt resistant. This means there will be few if any chemical cleaning agents spilt into marinas harming the ecology as such aggressive cleaning products are no longer needed. Importantly NanoLandGlobal’s products also make surfaces more scratch resistant.

These products last between 1 and 3 years after application depending on environmental factors. Hulls stay brighter and windows easier to see out of. For the motor yacht sector, rain repellent treatments on the wheelhouse windows means improved navigation visibility in stormy weather.

Hull performance is also improved using surface coatings that reduce drag as well as barnacle and algae adhesion, driving up fuel economy.

NanoLandGlobal also have engine and gearbox treatments that reduce fuel consumption, noise and vibration. “These amazing products are not oil or fuel additives” explains Reilly “but the oil or fuel acts as a carrier for these flexible silicone treatments that adhere to metal surfaces inside the engine or gearbox under heat – thereby subsequently reducing abrasion. This in turn reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by around 11%, and carbon particle emissions in diesel engines by over 60%.” 11% fuel saving is significant for even the wealthiest of owners.

The world’s merchant fleets are starting to use NanoLandGlobal’s products in their gearboxes to reduce maintenance downtime and high repair costs – superyachts can benefit too.

Nanotechnology used in flexible photovoltaic solar panel power systems are also evolving rapidly and are now available enabling better on-board power generation from the sun. These new systems are sheets rather than panels – much more flexible to the curvature of the yacht superstructure and more efficient in energy capture. Nanotechnology anti-reflective treatments on solar panels drive up energy capture by an average of 4%.

NanoLandGlobal is the world’s ultimate hub for all things related to nanotechnology.

Adam Voorhees is named World Superyacht Young Designer of the Year

June 1, 2010

Superyacht Design 'Ra' by young designer of the year, Adam Voorhees

A new vision for the future, Ra focuses on the maximum pleasure of seaside living. Named after the
Egyptian sun god Amun-Ra, the yacht explores transformability of space and interactions with light to
reinforce the connection with and heighten the beauty of its maritime environment. Ra exemplifies the
balance between public and private as the hierarchy of living spaces hosts fewer decks with larger volumes, creating more dramatic and usable environments. The main deck is a vast, multifunctional area that transforms for informal living or formal entertaining. Elevating all the guest suites above the main deck offers more secluded and prestigious accommodations with phenomenal views.

Innovative proportions between hull and superstructure plus the carefully crafted balance between hard and soft lines create a dynamic form that is instantly recognizable. Transparency through materials and transformability through structure define the visual drama of Ra and offer a more sophisticated approach to the connection between inside and out, encouraging users to gather, relax, and enjoy their surroundings.

Ra utilizes the Alsphere Displacement Gliding hull shape for minimized resistance and increased
seaworthiness. Because most of the displacement occurs in the keel, the unique form dramatically lowers rolling and slamming amplitudes while increasing stability and obtainable speeds. Lower resistance leads to a substantial reduction in fuel and operating costs as less power and equipment is required compared to traditional displacement hull forms. The design also significantly reduces wash, thus minimizing the yacht’s impact in environmentally sensitive locations.
Designed for now, Ra makes extensive use of cutting edge energy transformation and delivery systems. The diesel-electric hybrid propulsion package provides proven, reliable, and green technology. Azimuthal drives offer silent and clean propulsion in harbor while the same motors underway ensure vibration free travel. An advanced heat scavenging system and photovoltaics embedded in the superstructure provide all the needed energy for hospitality loads.

Placing the owners suite on the same level as the bridge indicates this as the position of control. The full width suite has separate areas for work, play, and rest. A private terrace resides aft of the bedroom. The suite can also be accessed directly from the helipad. The bridge revolves around a new concept of intuitive and gestural driven interfaces. This creates a singular, connected experience for the navigator to increase safety and the enjoyment of driving while reducing pilot error.

Five guest staterooms easily accommodate and reflect the varying tastes of each user. An ethos of fitness and wellbeing are present in the onboard gym, spa, and game areas. The library lounge offers multiple opportunities for relaxation. Separate crew and guest access among all levels also ensures privacy.

The main living deck hosts multiple opportunities for social interaction. Uninterrupted views and an intimate connection to the sea are evident with the bulwarks down while privacy and security are achieved when they are raised. A central, glass walled elevator links the decks physically and visually as well. Natural light streams in through the elevator shaft and additional skylights to illuminate the interiors.

Besides the advanced energy generation systems, the yacht is also equipped with the latest
communications and entertainment equipment. Smart phones are utilized to control individual comfort and entertainment systems, allowing personal and on-demand convenience for guests. Plus, access ways and systems are fingerprint protected while drop down ballistic panels, Long Range Acoustic Devices, and water cannons protect the yacht from waterborne threats.

Ra explicitly utilizes new design solutions, technical equipment, and materials to maintain a very low impact on the environment. Ra conforms to RINA Green Star plus Secure Yacht regulations, ABS and MCA large yacht codes, and IMO Alternative Design initiatives. Precise systems are used for handling and monitoring all aspects of the yacht. The Secure Yacht certification adds additional security measures and procedures to establish safety and protection to the owner, guests, and yacht at all times.
The IMO Alternative Design initiative maintains high safety and security standards while allowing Ra to
retain its unique and innovative architecture. Carbon offsets will also be purchased to equal the minimal
amount of carbon dioxide produced, resulting in a truly sustainable and carbon neutral vessel.
In all, Ra represents a visionary approach to the connections between luxury, comfortable living, and the nautical atmosphere.

A Look at M/Y JeMaSa

May 14, 2010

Naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design, and launched on January 28th 2006, motor yacht JeMaSa!

She is an attractive and practical 49.99 meter luxury motor yacht, with steel hull and aluminum
superstructure. In operation she is an extremely quiet yacht and she handles very well in close
quarters. JeMaSa has since the day she was launched, sailed around the world over 2.5 times.
She has visited countries such as Alaska, the Bahamas, San Juan Islands, Honduras, Thailand,
Antarctica and many more. During these trips all of the various sea conditions you can imagine
have been thrown at the vessel, and she handled them well.

On September 26th 2009 we had a rendezvous with her and her enthusiastic crew. And she
looked as gorgeous as she did on the day she was launched. Not much has changed on the
JeMaSa. The main salon and dining area are still in the pleasant brown and beige tones, and the
owners stateroom is still finished with teak. The only thing that the crew has changed are the
colors of some pipes in the engine room.

JeMaSa is a yacht that offers everything. She easily accommodates up to 12 guests in luxury, and
offers a comfortable living area for 10 crew members in 6 cabins. JeMaSa is optimized for owner
privacy and for chartering.

The main deck comprises a lobby and galley with a full beam owners area forward, this area
features a king-size bed, a dressing room and a beautiful full-width bathroom with his and hers
shower space. The dining area which easily handles up to 12 persons and main salon are on the
aft of the main deck. The side decks features comfortable seating areas and hot and cold buffets.
According to the season air blowers above the seating keep the area hot or chilled and the wind
from the side decks can be closed off with sliding glass screens. The dining room easily
accommodates up to 12 guests. A dumb waiter reaches all the above decks and ensures that food
can quickly and easily be served at any of the dining spaces onboard.

The lower deck comprises five cabins. Two VIP suites offer generous spaces with luxury
bathrooms. You can also enjoy a massage or spa treatment in the comfortable, finished in white
painted woods, massage room. The five double crew member cabins and crew mess are also on
the lower deck but they have their own stairway leading up to the main deck.
On the bridge deck Captain Juan Koegelenberg is responsible for the design of the well-laid-out
wheelhouse. The Captain’s cabin and office aft of this area lead on the spacious bridge deck
salon. Need to do some work during a trip? There also is a practical guest office on this deck.
The open forward space includes an impressive widescreen and a settee that can be converted
into a wide bed.

Shaded open-air lounging or a lovely sunbath, both are possible on the sun deck. The sunbathing
area can easily be covered when the sun will be to hot to sit in. JeMaSa also has a gymnasium so
you can still do your exercises or take a relaxing bath in the whirlpool tub. You prefer a shower,
no problem, the sun deck also comprises a convenient steam shower. On the sun deck the crew
can unfold the slide (over 8 meters high) for a refreshing dive in the ocean.
Are you interested in JeMaSa for charter or for sale? One thing is for sure, you won’t get bored on
this super yacht!
