St. Augustine The oldest city in America, St. Augustine switched hands between the English & Spanish for nearly 300 years before finally becoming a territory of Florida in 1821. Henry Flagler built the Ponce de Leon and Alcazar hotels and also promoted yachting in the area, making yacht racing an immensely popular sport among the wealthy. The streets of the town are cobblestone and many of the buildings exhibit Spanish colonial revival style of architecture.
