Refits

Dunya Yachts of Istanbul

July 28, 2010

Istanbul is a city at the crossroads of cultures, where Asia faces Europe across the legendary Bosporus. This enigmatic waterway divides the city, and provides a motivation for one of its oldest enterprises: shipbuilding.

Dunya has invested heavily to create the most modern and comprehensively equipped shipyard in Turkey. A shipyard that competes with northern Europe for facilities and quality and southern Europe for value and enthusiasm.

The 30,000 square metre facilities feature 180 metres of quays, state-of-the-art construction halls and a highly trained workforce that includes specialists in every aspect of luxury yacht building and refitting. Advanced technology meets centuries of know-how. The result? Some of the most exciting yachts of the next few years.

REFIT CAPRI Dunya was recently appointed by the 59 metre Lürssen, Capri, for a range of works, including a full repaint of the hull and superstructure.

The shipyard has extensive and impressive refit facilities, including a 5000 ton floating dock, 4500 square metres of climatecontrolled sheds and an 80 metre, covered dry dock, the only covered, climate-controlled dock in Turkey.

The refit division has a highly skilled on-site team with Englishspeaking project managers who work with both local and the most renowned international subcontractors. The planning department offers the most advanced technology, allowing all refit works to be planned in ERP/ IFS systems, and a monitoring system enabling the clients to receive real-time updates. No shipyard refits as well as a shipyard that builds from new; our expertise and experience in the requirements of shipbuilding give us an unparalleled insight into refits of the highest standard.

The construction of DY003, otherwise known as 72 metre Red Square, is well underway, with the hull and superstructure complete, and much of the mechanical and technical systems installed. Red Square will be the largest motor yacht yet built in Turkey. Six decks result in a huge interior volume of 1,600 GRT. Contemporary interior design is by Alberto Pinto at his most flamboyant. The spectacular main saloon has a glazed gallery connecting both main and upper deck lounges.

12 guests sleep in an upper (owners deck) suite and a full-beam VIP, two double and two twin cabins, all on the main deck.Red Square is set for launch in early 2011.

CUTTING EDGE CONTEMPORARY DESIGN: BLADE

88 metre Blade is a collaboration between Dunya Yachts and the highly regarded Ken Freivokh design. Her strong, bold appearance, inside and out, sets her apart, making the yacht instantly recognisable this will be a yacht of world-class status.

Blades innovative design opens her up to unimpeded sea views:
a triple-height glass atrium, uninterrupted windows in all of the main guest areas, all-glass swimming pool, and beach and gym facilities that open directly to the sea. Interior styling is innovative and contemporary. Seven guest suites are spacious enough for the lounge areas to become additional, separate cabins, providing accommodation for up to 20 guests.Three saloons, a cinema, conference rooms, library, 13 metre cabin tenders, 10 metre sports tender, garaging for jet skis and other sports equipment, and touch and go helipad, ensure that Blade is one of the worlds most sophisticated and comfortable yachts.

VAN DAM NORDIA ATTRACTS NEW REFIT WORK

July 7, 2010

Feadship motoryacht Sirene at Van Dam Nordia Shipyard for a refit.

In addition to the design and construction of new yachts, Van Dam Nordia also carries out extensive refits to the highest Dutch standards.

This month we welcomed Sirene to our yard, a motoryacht built by Feadship in 1962. This lovely yacht has already had many modifications over the decades, and the current owner is aiming to bring her back to original state.

Our activities include the laying of new teak decks, new windows, a paint job and a complete overhaul of the engine room. The client chose Van Dam Nordia for this extensive refit work because of our renowned craftsmanship and professionalism, combined with some impressive cost efficiencies.

Royal warrant holder Van Dam Nordia was established in 1881 and is one of Holland’s oldest shipyards. Located on the Ringvaart canal in Aalsmeer (near Amsterdam), it has 30 highly specialised employees in all disciplines. The yard’s main activities involve the design and construction of customized sail and motoryachts and refits of existing vessels.

Moonen to complete Dixon 120 superyacht

May 28, 2010

October 2009, Dixon 120 arrived at Moonen Shipyards location Groot-Ammers

Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands:  Moonen Shipyards has been commissioned for a unique project to finish a 120 ft yacht designed by Bill Dixon which was started by Royal Denship in Denmark before bankruptcy. Around a quarter of the semi-displacement motoryacht had been completed when the Danish yard went into administration in June 2009.

The owner of the uncompleted vessel contacted Moonen due to the yard's growing reputation in the refit market as well as its fine track record of building new superyachts. "Due to the status of the project at the time it was abandoned, the completion of the yacht is a delicate balance between a new build and a refit," explains Moonen's director operations Mark Vermeulen.

"Various parts of the build are at different stages, as is the case with a refit. We have to pick up both the physical construction work and fill significant gaps in the engineering packages. This will require full range of expertise and it is the type of challenge that everyone at Moonen relishes."

The fact that it concerns a motoryacht that yet had to be completed and the fact that composite is not the material that Moonens builds her reputation on, the project needed a "Think different"-approach.

The interior styling is in the hands of the owner, and the yard is also partnering with external parties such as composite experts Green Marine, Alewijnse for the electrical installation and De Leeuw Yacht services for the painting.

One of the major issues for Moonen is that the yard has never previously built a yacht in GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic). All the GRP parts of the vessel are available except the main deck, with the hull and bridge deck being almost completely assembled. Around 20 percent of the equipment is available, including the main engines, gearboxes and other small components.

Moonen has already carried out a complete design and status check, which made clear that the engineering packages were randomly incomplete. After these have been closed, the yard will make a start with building the stern section of the hull while simultaneously completing the technical installation. The yacht is planned for launching in May 2011.

Van Dam Nordia Finishes up Several Refits

May 10, 2010

In addition to the design and construction of new yachts, Van Dam Nordia also carries out extensive refits to the highest Dutch standards.

Finished last month was the 70’ MY “White Princess”. Jobs on this ship included a complete painting and new teak deck on the entire vessel.

We welcomed the 55’ Nordia “Saphir”” back for a refit. Work included the installation of a custom build protective cockpit, paint jobs, new navigation instruments and maintenance.

This week we waved goodbye to the 65’Motor trawler Beluga. This impressive ship had an extensive overhaul. She was completely repainted in a matte grey and white combination which makes her look even more sturdy than she already was.

With a slipway of 150 tons the shipyard can accommodate yachts up to 36 metres in length.

Van Dam Refit clients are looking to access the yard’s renowned craftsmanship, professionalism and cost efficiencies.
