The ship is called the USS General H.S. Vandenberg, named after a World War II Air Force General and CIA Director. The 523 foot-long vessel is 66 years old, and on its way to becoming an artificial reef 6 miles southeast of Key West, Florida, in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Preparation for the sinking of the ship began back in 2007, and is now scheduled for the 27th of May 2009, dependent upon suitable weather.
